Taking care of your lawn can be a hassle, but it doesn't need to. Here are a few tips for beginners or novices to reference whenever they need a refresher.
Mowing for a Healthy Lawn
Proper mowing plays a significant role in how healthy your lawn is. If a lawn is cut too short it will have a shallow root system, and will be less drought tolerant. The optimum height for a lawn should be four (4) inches.
Cutting with dull blades tears the leaf blade and leaves turf open to fungus.
Cut lawn only when it needs it. Cutting when dry, or freezing temperatures are expected, will only damage the turf.
Do not leave excessive grass clippings on the lawn, as this will smother the grass, and cause it to die.
Watering your Turf
Applying the proper amount of water is essential to maintain a healthy lawn. A properly watered lawn will have less weeds, a lush green color, and will be less susceptible to fungus.
Watering your lawn early in the morning between 2:00 a.m. and finishing around 8:00 a.m. is a great place to start. Watering for long periods of time will create a more deep drought tolerant root system. We suggest 45 minutes per zone.
Only water when your lawn needs it. Over-watering can make as much, if not, more damage than forgetting to water it. Your lawn will tell you when it needs the moisture. Look for these signs:
Lawn is turning grayish in color
Blades of grass are folding in half
Footprints are left in the lawn after walking
Remember that each county and state have a different water schedule is place. For Hernando, Pasco, Pinelles, and Hillsborough county in Florida and follow this link: https://www.seabreezepestcontrol.com/untitled-c23os to see your schedule.
